Read, Write Inc
We are proud to be a Read, Write Inc. This is a comprehensive, structured programme for the teaching of phonics, reading and writing. The aim of the programme is to develop independent, confident readers to demonstrate a love of reading. Read, Write Inc is taught from Reception and children are taught in small ability groups. We make regular assessments of the children to ensure that they are progressing as well as they should. Children who need additional support are given 1:1 top up sessions. This predominantly a programme for Key Stage One pupils. Once your child has completed the programme they will be taught in Literacy lessons. Children in Key Stage 2 who still need support with their decoding skills access a programme called Fresh Start.

We use the National Curriculum to guide our Literacy teaching. Our literacy lessons include reading, speaking and listening, writing, spelling, handwriting, punctuation and grammar (SPAG). Children have daily literacy lessons and we use a variety of approaches to engage, excite and motivate the children. Our literacy lessons link to our topics so that children have a wide range of opportunities to be immersed in their learning and apply their skills. We pride ourselves on knowing our children very well so the teachers use personalised approaches to teaching. We teach spelling through a structured spelling programme. We instil in children a love of reading and ensure that class reading corners have a range of texts to excite the children.
Reading
Children further develop their reading skills through guided reading and reading across the curriculum. A range of texts, genres and authors are study so that children become aware of a range of different reading approaches and are able to identify key features of different texts which they use to develop their writing skills. They read like a writer. Children are taught to analyse texts and form opinions. The school actively supports reading at home.
Writing
We use a range of approaches for story telling techniques. The children are taught key features of a range of different text types. Writing is supported by handwriting practice and the structured teaching of SPAG. Children write end of unit pieces of writing in their progress books. This clear demonstrates the impact of teaching and progress over time.
